What are the best pencils for sketching?
For detail, you want H pencils and for adding shadows and texture, you will want B pencils. The hardness of the pencil's graphite core is usually marked on the side of the pencil. The higher the number, the harder the graphite and the lighter the mark left on the paper. The standard sketching pencil is HB or 2B.
What are the best sketchbooks?
Of course, you can sketch on any type of paper, however, I recommend getting a good sketchbook. Not only will it help with your drawings, but it is also a great way to record your progress. Sketchbooks can also be a wonderful visual art journal. Cool easy way to record your life and progress! You don't have to fill it just with art drawings and experiment with doodle art too! My daughter loves these kawaii doodles.
I personally like spiral-bound sketchbooks as they are easy to keep the page open, but you need one that feels good to you. The size doesn't really matter. If you want to sketch on the go be sure to choose something smaller that will easily fit into a purse or backpack, so you can pull it out and start working wherever inspiration strikes.
Here are some popular brands. (affiliate links)
- Strathmore Series 400 Sketchbook
- Pentalic Sketch Book, Hardbound, 8-1/2-Inch by 11-Inch
- Moleskine A3 Art Plus Sketchbook
- Canson Artist Series Sketchbook
- Masterclass Premium 9 Inch by 12 Inch Spiral Bound Hardcover Sketchbook – this one has a sturdy cover but is also spiral bound.
Drawing Tips
I recommend starting with a light touch, then going back over the lines that look right when you're satisfied with the drawing. It's a lot easier to clean up mistakes when you start lightly.
To sketch lightly, keep your wrist and arms loose, not tight. You might think you have more control when you hold the pencil firmly, but you actually lose a little dexterity. Some of the best artists draw with their whole arms and put their backs into their work!
You might also test your eraser on a bit of scrap paper before you start. Some of the erasers that come built-in on standard pencils can be hard or leave marks on softer drawing paper.
I prefer "white" erasers to the pink kind because they are softer and a little stickier. That helps pick up the pencil from the paper without damaging the texture. You can usually find white erasers in the art supply section of the craft store.
My Best Tip:
The biggest thing to remember is you don't have to be perfect. Art is for everyone and is an amazing positive creative outlet. All you need to do is relax and have fun!
I hope you now are inspired to build your creativity and have found easy stuff to draw! Let me know your favorite in the comments!
